Five Energy Saving Tips For The Home

Monday, March 30, 2009

In today's economy, everyone is looking for ways to save a little money. What better way than to cut down on your energy bills. Here are five important energy saving tips for the home that everyone can use.

One: insulate all of the wall sockets in your home. Remove the plate around your wall sockets using a screwdriver, than put some insulation around the box. You can buy precut foam gaskets that fit around the sockets for real easy setup. This helps prevent air from entering your home through these small holes keeping your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Two: You have to make sure that you replace the filters for your furnace and air conditioner on a regular basis. Changing them every three months is a good idea because when air can't pass freely through the filter, it will have to work harder to do its job, which means that it will cost you money you don't need to be spending.

Three: When it is summer time, you want to keep your curtains and blinds closed to shut out the heat from the sun. The heat from the sun will make your home warmer, which means that your air conditioner will have to work twice as hard to cool your home. During the winter time you want to open your blinds and curtains to let the sun warm your home. This will make the work your heater has to do much less. At night during winter time, you want to close the blinds and curtains to keep in the warm air.

Four: One very important way that you can start saving energy is to make sure that the weather stripping around your doors and windows is still working correctly. You can do an easy test with a dollar bill. Place the dollar into the window or door area where the weather stripping is and if you can easily move it around, then you need to replace the stripping with new.

Five: This is one of the most important energy saving tips for the home. You need to have your air conditioner and your furnace checked and maintained by a professional yearly. This will help you keep them in good working order and will also help you with saving energy.

These are just a few of the energy saving tips for the home that you need to know about. There are many others that can help you start saving energy also. It is a good idea for you to do your research to learn all you can about how to save energy and therefore money. The more tips you learn, the more money and energy you will be able to save.
